Abandoned Hospital

A short time ago, tho it feels like years since before the quarantine lock-downs due to covid-19, my friends and I traveled across a few new England states, as you may have read in the last post and we made a weekend out of it. We explored both the race track and this enormous hospital in just two days..This hospital was a MISSION located essentially on top of a mountain for some reason. We were up before the sun to find a light mix of snow and rain coming down which made our hike up said mountain all the more enjoyable...It felt like a long hike but realistically it was less than an hour getting to the top but between the cold and the high altitude I was ready to duck inside one of the buildings to escape the elements. The Campus was pretty large but easy to spot the main building where all the treasures were. Brandon had the way in all figured out and just like that we were inside a giant abandoned hospital on the hunt for the library and the big surgical lights that we all love so much! The way that the building was laid out was extremely confusing, I believe that was the fault of so many new additions installed over the years that it functioned. This place was opened in 1919 and operated until the early 2000s. It development was funded by one generous man who didn’t just build a hospital but he also gave an endowment to support its future financial needs so they could provide low cost care to residents, his family continued to donate funds and additions to the property over the years until the 2000's. It's decline in use was due to changing times and new advances in medical equipment forcing them to send many patients to more modern facilities for treatments not offered there and with the lack of patients they finally had to close the doors where it has sat empty over looking the town ever since. The First section we explored wasn’t in the worst shape considering how decayed other parts were, we found several empty rooms that people would stay in, you could tell by the way the few things left screwed into the wall where the beds and other equipment would of been. As we got further in the place became more and more decayed showing its true age, there were so many rooms and hallways it was almost like a maze, we in fact passed the library we were looking for once or twice before discovering it. The library was one of the main draws of this place it was rather unique looking the walls lined with medical books from every decade and a long table down the center where you would imagine doctors looking up information or studying late at night. There was an old book cart on wheels and I have never seen another one anywhere else yet, it that was placed perfectly in the room for our photos. Due to the frigid temps and water damage nearly all the books were frozen in place and suck in the shelves with a layer of various molds lining the book spines. The floor was soaked at one point and than frozen over making almost an ice rink indoors, Amber was brave and stood on the ice barefoot so we could get our shots! Near the library we found the small chapel painted pale blue which was cool but so small and dark it was a bit difficult to shoot. As we continued on we found several types old medical equipment, such as the x-ray machines and the buttons that control them, we got to see every inch of the rooms where hundreds of people had their bones and guts examined, we saw a few different tables/beds that were worth shooting and eventually the hospital turned into some sort of elderly home. It seemed like it would of been a nice place to stay given the time few organs and pianos in the main the room and several long stay rooms down long hallways, We found the bath tubs with chairs attached that could rise and lower people into the water and a few remnants of peoples personal things here and there. We finally made it to the basement where we found several operating rooms with at least 4 or 5 beautiful and intact blue surgical lights! The pattern on the glass was beautiful and despite the cold we shot down there for quite while before heading out. Worth noting that we never take a main road in or out, so when we left the hospital we some how got turned around and walked in a big circle back to the hospital, it took us a bit to get our bearings and find our trail back to the car but when we did it was nice to get warm. All in all was an awesome trip and absolutely worth the cold wet hike, I would of gone for just the library alone but all the other treasures we found made it extra special. Hopefully we'll go back sometime.
