The last few months...
I suppose at this point I should make a note of some of the world events that have transpired over the last few months, you may have noticed the blogs have slowed down quite a bit, though if we are being honest I have had nothing but time to write them. Some times I find myself inspired by the madness but like anyone else the world news takes its tole and it has been difficult to get myself to write anything that is worth reading these last few weeks. It forever surprises me how much can change on a global scale seemingly overnight. Covid-19 is a perfect example of this fast paced life, though there were some warnings of the pandemic , we live in an age where it is so difficult to know what is true and what is a media frenzy which is what largely attribute to the devastating effects it has had on us, here media nonsense and misinformation is constantly gets us in trouble as a country why would this be any different. Many of my friends and family self quarantined choosing not to go out at all or only when necessary, but being a young rather healthy individual and taking necessary precautions in all public places I used the time to go exploring more with my two friends, because the dusty remains of old abandoned places, where its highly unlikely of running into any other people seemed like a good way to keep creating art and retain some amount of sanity. We went to some really incredible places all over the map that I can't wait to tell you all about, but I would like to start at the beginning of the "lock-downs" On April 5th we found ourselves in Boston, the city that is always moving and bustling with people was that day very empty. From Faneuil hall to some of the busiest streets, there was only a few masked people walking around, mostly those who had to walk their dogs and homeless people with no place to else to go. We walked around downtown for quite awhile visiting the sea lions at the aquarium near the harbor, (me) missing the food trucks that usually drive around with delicious cheap bites, we stood in the middle of the roads with no traffic and got some shots I didn’t think I'd ever see in my lifetime..."the cities all slept".
As a photographer I feel it is some-what our responsibility to document the events such as these that effect us all as humans, be it wonderful or tragic the human experience as we know it has never been this way before and in such changing times likely won't be this way for long, we must catch it and remember it if we can.
Now as we are all learning to cope with this new life covid has created for us we are also creating a whole new world for ourselves. I am proud to say that my generation and those near it are leading movements to try change the world for the better. In my pursuit to document human events I found myself back in the same city June 3rd standing beside hundreds of people who despite the fear of sickness and frightening military police presence, stood in the park under the blazing sun to peacefully protest police brutality and racial injustice. To be brief I stand with all those who are against police brutality and violence I believe that a police officer should serve the same amount of time for killing an unarmed human as an average citizen would for killing a police officer because we are all equal. I would like to see all people of all races treated fairly not only by public servants such as the police but also by each other, we all need to respect and love each other as fellow humans, as Bob Marley said Inject hate with Love. This protest was a few days after the wild nights in the city where fires were set and business were looted, I don't support the destruction of private business and property however I do to an extent understand why it happened violence creates violence. But to stay on topic and not to trail on into politics we went to this protest and what we saw and shot largely was beautiful, it was people from all walks of life coming together to try and change the world for the better, we marched though the streets and let the world know that what was happened to all those killed unjustly was not okay and would not go unpunished. We saw more police and buses of soldiers than I had ever seen in one place before but despite the tensions there was no issues to speak of and everyone left by curfew.
The world is wild place right now I have put these paragraphs together because I feel it gives perspective on just how much has happened in Boston in such a short time, these events have impacted my work as an artist as well as many other creatives in the industry as well, we may not have to much control over things that are going on right now, some of us may be going mad from the lack of empathy and understanding in the world but we do have control over how we respond in our art work we can take all of this news boil it down till it makes sense, and turn it into some thing beautiful if we try.
It is also worth noting that just a few weeks ago my friends and I also participated in the national art drive put on by the raw showcase company. Creatives from all over the world showed their art work outside of homes and local business’s to brighten up the world for the day ! We got to set up our print work outside my home and host a safe social distance walk by art show. It was a bunch of fun and a good number of friends and family turned out. We received several print orders which was especially nice as most paid photo jobs were postponed several weeks. A big Thank you again if you were one of the wonderful people who showed up to support local art.
Be sure to check out all the photos on the more galleries page as well as Instagram where the live streams from the protest and art show can be found
Stay safe and spread love, and I’ll try to update the blog again soon!
